I was at work yesterday and I decided to have one of those YouTube playlists playing in the background as I went about my business. Now, I am a true 90’s music fan so naturally that’s what I set it to. Somewhere in between I heard a very familiar song, “What Would You Do‘ by City High. Now, I’ve heard that song a million times before; but somehow, yesterday is when I actually listened to it, internalized the lyrics.
I replayed that song about fifteen times, or so.
It really got me thinking a lot because it is a true reflection of reality and what happens in the world around us. Many of us barely understand what other people go through and are very quick to judge them for what they do without fully understanding what guided these decisions.
We are callous, ruthless and lack natural compassion towards one another; that we often feel we are better than others. We often forget that who we are and what we have or are born into is a matter of circumstances and God’s grace. We did nothing to “deserve” our position in society; and similarly, the less fortunate did nothing to “deserve” struggle. We are all born into our own individual lives as per Gods plan. And we need not forget that.
Many people struggle to make ends meet, to move forward and have better lives for themselves, that sometimes seemingly poor choices are made as a result. And yet, it is not up to us to judge. It is up to us to be compassionate, empathetic and understanding of each other’s plight. Advice if you may, but do not belittle others because you feel that you are better.
I love music from the 90’s mainly because there’s a story in it. There’s a lesson. You just have to listen.
Have a great weekend!
